90 Years #VisionThe format Kunstverein is unique. Founded more than 200 years ago through civic engagement, Kunstvereine opened up a dialogue with the public about contemporary art from the very beginning. But what is the potential of the format Kunstverein today? How do Kunstvereine react to the current processes of social change? What visions are they currently following?
On the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the Bielefelder Kunstverein we would like to discuss these questions with Oriane Durand (director of the Dortmunder Kunstverein), Bettina Steinbrügge (director of the Kunstverein in Hamburg) and Milan Ther (director of the Kunstverein Nürnberg), and invite you to join us. The discussion will be moderated by Nadine Droste. It will take place in German. Admission is free.

Artist's Talk with Pakui Hardware in context of the exhibition »Extrakorporal«Fri, November 16, 2018, 19:00
Opening of the exhibitions »Pakui Hardware. Extrakorporal«, »Tamara Henderson. Seasons End: Out of Body« and »Jahresgaben 1018/2019«Pakui Hardware is interested in the close relationship between materiality, technology and economies. Central to their work is the question as to how far technology actually does alter economics and our physical perception of reality. They investigate questions of automation, robotics, synthetic biology and the significance of new materials. The artist duo produces sculptures and installations suffused with various materials, images, and shapes, which are often reminiscent of futuristic or biological settings. Here, fabric and material produced by technology encounter transparent, ephemeral materials; they determine the equally organic and synthetic appearance of their objects and spatial installations.
The exhibition »Extrakorporal« immerses the viewer in a Petri dish, or perhaps in a shamanistic realm? Here, organs and tissues grow outside bodies, the future behavior of which is still a matter for speculation. Turritopsis jellyfish and sea-urchin larvae alike are examined cell by cell in an attempt to track down the recipe that makes them immortal. Seemingly familiar yet elusive objects are suspended in space and appear to evoke the inexplicable energies of self-rejuvenation, and they are reminiscent of ritualistic masks. They resemble trophies gained by extracting the essence of the life and, hence, of the immortality these sea creatures possess.
Pakui Hardware, founded 2014 by Neringa Černiauskaitė, born 1984 in Klaipeda, Lithuania, and Ugnius Gelguda, born 1977 in Vilnius, Lithuania, had numerous solo shows since 2014, amongst others at EXILE in Vienna (AUT), at Tenderpixel Gallery in London (GB, both 2018), at Trafó contemporary art center in Budapest (HU), at SIC Room at Kiasma in Helsinki (FIN, both 2017), MUMOK in Vienna (AUT, 2016) and at kim? Contemporary Art Center in Riga (LVA, 2015). Lately they took part in group exhibitions, e.g. at MAXXI in Rome (I), at Domaine Pommery in Reims (F), at Baltic Triennal 13 at Contemporary Art Center in Vilnius (LT), at Museum Sztuki in Łódź (P, all 2018), at Kunstverein Braunschweig and Kunstverein Freiburg, at the Kunsthalle Basel (SUI) and at Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (AUS, all 2017).

Workshop »Unterwegs in der Landschaft Stadt« with Kay von Keitz (author and curator, Cologne) as part of the »Bielefelder City Walks«. RSVP until September 24, 2018
In the spirit of flâneurs and situationists, but also from the perspective of current artists, the urban landscape, which we generally refer to as a city, should be viewed and experienced together. A »different view«, which the arts have always allowed and bring us closer to, should be directed towards larger contexts, urban and architectural peculiarities as well as remarkable details. It deals with planned as well as unplanned, plausible and inexplicable, historical and atmospheric moments that are ignored in routine everyday perception.

Lecture »Unterwegs in der Landschaft Stadt« with Kay von Keitz (author and curator, Cologne) as part of the »Bielefelder City Walks«Kay von Keitz studied Cultural Studies and Aesthetic Practice at the University of Hildesheim. In 1999, together with Sabine Voggenreiter, he founded the international exhibition and event project »plan - Architektur Biennale Köln«. From 2012 to 2015, on behalf of the City of Cologne, he designed and implemented the first phase of the newly established »City Lab for Art in Public Space« under the project title »The Urban Congress« together with Markus Ambach. Since November 2014 he is chairman of the Art Advisory Council of the City of Cologne.

Bielefelder City Walk #22 with Cynthia Krell - Art in Public Space: Who looks at this?Meeting point: Bielefelder Kunstverein, Welle 61, BielefeldDestination: Bielefelder AltstadtDuration: ca. 1,5 Stunden
Art in everyday life often causes perplexity - if anyone reacts at all. Because many people often go past sculptures, fountains, installations, murals or ground works carelessly. Art is not recognized as such. Therefore, the city walk not only leads into the sculpture park of the Kunsthalle Bielefeld, but also focuses on the seemingly casual art in public space. It is about an approach through a subjective perception, an approach in exchange about it or through artistic interventions.
